30 December 2022, Dubai, UAE – The Philippine Consulate General in Dubai and Northern Emirates held several activities to commemorate the 126th Anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal at the Consulate grounds.
With the theme from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), “Rizal: Alaalang Iningatan, Yaman Ngayon ng Bayan (Preserved Memories, Treasured Today by the Nation),” the activities aimed to honor and show respect to the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal.
The activities kick-started with a flag raising and wreath-laying ceremony at the Consulate, headed by Consul General Renato N. Dueñas, Jr., and attended by the officers and staff of the Consulate and its attached agencies.
In his message, Consul General Dueñas stated that, “We have the duty to preserve and treasure the memory of Rizal and all that he has done for our nation making the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of all Filipinos.” He further noted that the call is to honor Rizal’s memory and enrich his legacy by emulating him in our thoughts, action, and every aspect of our lives to ensure that his noble ideas will be passed on to the next generation.
This was followed by a free viewing of the documentary, “Finding Rizal in a Time of Barriers” which was attended by the personnel of the Consulate. The documentary is a project of Senator Loren Legarda in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Philippine Embassy in Berlin, and produced by Light Vision Films. The documentary revealed little known aspects of Dr. Rizal’s first trip to Europe and his life in a time of barriers created by skin color, religion, political ideologies, and colonialism. END
